Bad Breath
Bad breath is the common term for Halitosis. Bad breath is the noticeably unpleasant odour exhaled in breathing, which can be caused by several things including:
- While you sleep, less saliva is produced and your mouth becomes dry the perfect breeding ground for bacteria that causes bad breath. While you are awake, there is an active production of saliva in your mouth; the saliva is responsible for washing away odours coming from decaying food.
- Mouth Infections – Infections due to cavities and gum diseases can result in bad breath. This bad breath cause can be remedied by having dentists check the infections so they can be treated effectively.
- Poor dental hygiene – It is important to brush and floss your teeth regularly to remove bits of food stuck in between your teeth. Proper dental hygiene is one of the most important aspects to think about in dealing with bad breath causes.
- Food/Drinks/Tobacco – Bad breath can also come from food items like garlic and onions; drinks like coffee and red wine. Smoking cigarettes and tobacco can also contribute to bad breath causes.
Respiratory Tract Infections and other illnesses – these bad breath causes stem from internal organs and not just from the mouth itself.
Preventing and treating bad breath causes can be as easy as practicing proper oral hygiene. Occasionally, however, your dentist may prescribe an oral antiseptic that can kill odour-causing germs in the mouth. Also, a thorough check-up of your teeth and gums can also help your dentist in determining the proper treatment for a specific bad breath cause.
