Cosmetic Dentistry - Dental Veneers

Dazzling Smiles with Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are at the forefront of cosmetic dentistry. Dental veneers can drastically improve the quality in the appearance of a patient's smile by covering gaps and severely discoloured teeth. It can also be used to protect a tooth weakened by cracks or chips.

What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are a thin custom-made, shell-like coating that goes over chipped, cracked, or badly discoloured teeth. They can also be used to close unsightly gaps, by making the veneers thicker and shaping them to suit the mouth and teeth, making them appear straight and even, even if they are crooked! Because they really only change the appearance of teeth more than the function (although they can help with function as well in certain situations), they are considered a forefront procedure of cosmetic dentistry. When they are used on all visible teeth, they create a very dramatic transformation, as they can make teeth appear bigger, whiter, and hide any chipped, damaged, or any undesirably shaped teeth.

Composite or Porcelain Veneers?

There are two types of dental veneer, porcelain veneers and composite veneers. Porcelain veneers are more expensive because they are stain resistant, longer lasting, and more durable than composite veneers. They are also approximately £200-£300 pounds dearer than composites, (depending on which dentist used) however if you intend to replace the composites immediately each time they come to the end of their use, then this will become more expensive over a longer period of time as porcelain veneers last at least five to ten years and composites last up to one to five years max depending on how well they are looked after.

Porcelain veneers do have a few advantages over composites as they look more realistic, and are more stain resistant than composites, which stain easily. The drawback is that you get what you pay for, and porcelain veneers have a lot to offer. Porcelain may last longer and looks better, but composites also have advantages, they are cheaper, and require very little tooth reduction as opposed to porcelain veneers which may need quite a lot of work done on the teeth to ensure that they do not come off easily. They can also be fitted in fewer appointments than porcelain veneers.

When deciding what dental veneer will suit you, it is always best to consult with your local dentist as they can advise you best on your own teeth and check that that your teeth are able to support veneers, or advise you on any other options available to you.
