Tooth Decay
Tooth decay happens when bacteria on the teeth changes substances like sugars to acid, which corrodes the teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to toothache, tooth loss and dental infection. Not only is tooth decay treatable, you can take preventive steps to stop it happening to you.
Symptoms and Causes
Tooth decay is caused by several acid-producing bacteria within the mouth, which turn sugars such as sucrose, glucose and fructose into acids. If left alone, this leads to the demineralisation of the teeth; the first prerequisite for tooth decay. Tooth decay doesn't carry symptoms until it reaches later stages, such as cavities or dental infections, in which case, symptoms includes: bad breath, toothache, discoloured spots on teeth (white, grey, brown or black), tooth sensitivity and a nasty taste in the mouth.
Treatment
Preventive treatment is always best. If you suspect you may have tooth decay, do not hesitate. Prevention is better than cure.
